With each weekly serving of Kid Scoop, we'll share the latest news in the world of kids' TV and movies, so you can be the know-it-all for a change. This week's scoop features a 'victorious' werewolf, a new network, and efforts to end bullying.
Bite Club
Is “werewolf” is the new “vampire” these days on film and TV, or are they actually biting neck and neck? The latest creepy case in point: Nickelodeon superstar Victoria Justice (Victorious) will star in the teen sci-fi comedy The Boy Who Cried Werewolf on Saturday, October 23. Justice plays an awkward teen (read: she wears glasses) who is accidentally transformed into a werewolf. Brooke Shields also shows up as a Romanian housekeeper. Yes, it's about werewolves, but naturally it's also about family, self-esteem, and a cute young Romanian butcher -– probably the best thing to happen to butchers since Alice met Sam.
Hello, Hub!
On October 10, say goodbye to Discovery Kids Channel and hello to The Hub, a new family-targeted network produced jointly by Discovery Communications and Hasbro. A full lineup is planned for that day, including Family Game Night, My Little Pony, Pound Puppies, Fraggle Rock, The Twisted Whiskers Show, Cosmic Quantum Ray and Deltora Quest. Learn more about those shows and see some sneak preview videos. Any party attended by both G.I. Joe and Strawberry Shortcake probably has something for everyone.
The Battle Against Bullying
October is fast becoming known for anti-bullying efforts, including Worldwide Day of Bullying Prevention (October 4) and National Bullying Prevention Month. Nick News addresses the issue in its latest special, Sticks, Stones and CyberSlams, premiering Sunday, October 3 at 9p. The show shares perspectives from both bullies and their victims.
Meanwhile, CNN, People Magazine and Cartoon Network are collaborating on their own anti-bullying initiative called Stop Bullying: Speak Up, which launches October 4.
Sadly, these programs come less than six months after the tragic suicide of 15-year-old Phoebe Prince, a victim of bullying. But Phoebe's death and these efforts will hopefully drive awareness, and save lives.
What are you telling your kids to do if bullied? Chime in now!
